It’s the time of the year when certain parasites and epidemics soar. Lincoln County is currently seeing the worst tick-and-flea infestation of the past fifteen years. Our advice is to take measures immediately and to see your veterinary care provider as soon as possible. Tapeworm infestation is another health alert. We recommend that you deworm your pet one extra time this summer. Parvo is, as usual, present, and no matter what age, your dog should be vaccinated every six months. We would like to remind pet owners that when the temperature reaches 100 degrees, your dog needs to be given lots of shade and water or be brought inside the house. We say it all the time -- dogs feel the temperature and the humidity altogether. This means that on a day with temperatures over 100 and humidity over 60 your dog will feel 160. And there is no such thing as too much heartworm prevention, so don’t forget to give heartworm prevention every month and have your pets checked yearly. We wish you and your pets a healthy safe summer! Dr. Nancy Johnson, DVM
